Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

What is CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)?

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is an entirely practical method of changing the negative thought processes that can often lead to unwanted and undesirable feelings about ourselves. These thoughts can hold us back from achieving our full potential; and, if unchecked, can lead to issues like anxiety; depression; and irrational fears and self-destructive behaviour.

How does CBT work?

During a series of CBT sessions, you are helped to understand the impact that negative thinking can have on your feelings and your behaviour. These thoughts are often entirely “automatic” and can seem to occur incessantly and without any control.

Your therapist will offer you practical techniques to help you challenge and change these thought processes; and these changes can have a direct positive impact on the way that you feel and consequently on how you behave. Ultimately CBT is designed to assist you back into a state of greater awareness and control.

CBT is very much about you as an individual and it is always advisable to have an initial discussion or consultation with a CBT therapist before embarking a course of sessions in order to correctly assess your suitability for it.
